William Jay Smith to Isabella Gardner, September 8, 1978. Smith tells Gardner that he is horrified to hear the sad news about her husband, Allen Tate. He is sorry for all that she has been through and understands that she cannot reunite with Tate. Smith tells of his travels with his wife Sonja. He thanks Gardner for her kindness toward David. Smith also mentions that at one time, Tate wanted him to be his literary executor, but that he believes that Tate changed his mind.
