Description

This is the signature of Jacob (also Jakob) Bernays (1824-1881), a German philologist and Hebrew scholar.

Bernays was one of the first organizers of the Jewish Theological Seminary at Breslau. He was charged with formulating a method of study for the training of rabbis. He also taught courses on history, literature and philosophy at the seminary when it opened in 1854.

Bernays left the seminary in 1866 when he was called to teach at Bonn University, where he was appointed assistant professor and chief librarian. Bernays published many scholarly works during his time at the seminary and at the university. Bernays bequeathed his library to the seminary in Breslau.
